The salawat and religious recitals in praise of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. resounded across the country today when Brunei Darussalam celebrated the Maulidur Rasul or the birthday of the great Prophet. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam joined his subjects in a mass gathering in Bandar Seri Begawan this morning and led the procession around part of the capital.
On arrival at the Taman Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in Bandar Seri Begawan, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was greeted by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Yang Berhormat Pehin Jawatan Luar Pekerma Raja Dato Seri Utama Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Mohamad Zain, who is the Chairman of the Executive Committee for National Level Islamic Celebrations.
Also present were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Abdul Azim, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik and His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen.
The celebration began with a mass recital of the surah Al-Fatihah, led by the State Mufti, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz.
The Minister of Religious Affairs, in his welcoming speech, expressed the hope that such a celebration would give a positive effect as well as awareness to Muslims to exemplify characteristics of Prophet Muhammad, S.A.W.
His Majesty was then introduced to heads of about 140 contingents taking part in the procession. These contingents representing ministries, government departments, academic institutions, uniformed personnel, associations, mukim and village consultative councils as well as organisations from the private sector in the Brunei-Muara District, took part in the gathering and procession.
A dikir group from the Ministry of Religious Affairs performed the Dikir Marhaban to the sound of a 21-round cannon salute.
To seek blessings on the occasion, a doa selamat was read by the State Mufti, Yang Berhormat Pahin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Awang Haji Abdul Aziz.
The Taman and its surroundings were filled with the sounds of of the salawat praising the Prophet, led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid.
At the conclusion of the selawat tribute, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam led the procession along the main route around Bandar Seri Begawan, accompanied by members of the Royal Family. His Majestys presence highlighted the occasion, and spurred the participants with greater enthusiasm, while at the same time expressing their loyalty in instilling and practising the tenets of Islam as conveyed by the Prophet in upholding and propagating Islamic principles in Brunei Darussalam. Todays celebration commemorated the trials and tribulations faced by Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. in spreading and upholding the teachings of Islam. The occasion also marked the manifestation of love and compassion of the Ummah towards a leader who exemplifies humanity, as it is in the teachings conveyed by Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. that has guided mankind through times of uncertainty.
